What are the criteria for this classification?

Universities are evaluated based on six criteria, which QS calls ‘Indicators’. These categories examine the performance of a university and award a general ranking. These indicators are:

• Academic reputation: This indicator is about how good teaching and research are in a university. It constitutes 40 percent of the overall ranking score.

• Faculty/student ratio: This criterion is used to evaluate how much academic and teaching staff is available for the number of students. A lower ratio of students per staff usually means more personalized attention, support, and interaction.

• International student ratio: This measures the diversity of an institution. It shows that a university can attract student talent from around the world and has a global perspective.

• International staff ratio: The amount of staff of international origin is an indication of academic quality, research collaboration, and commitment to a wide range of viewpoints.

• Employer reputation: This indicator measures how potential employers rate a university. A high score is an endorsement of the knowledge and skills of the students nurtured by a university.

• Citations per faculty: This criterion measures a university’s performance in terms of research and innovation. It is an indicator of academic health.

These rankings confer prestige to universities and in the case of those that consistently appear, they further consolidate their reputation.
