Migration is defined as the geographic displacement of individuals or groups, generally for economic or social reasons. Migration has always been talked about, since it has occurred since the beginning of the evolution of the human being.
“According to the IOM World Migration Report 2020, as of June 2019, the number of international migrants was estimated to be almost 272 million worldwide, 51 million more than in 2010. Nearly two-thirds were labor migrants. . International migrants made up 3.5% of the world population in 2019, compared to 2.8% in 2000 and 2.3% in 1980.
According to what was expressed by the UN, in recent decades, possibly the largest amount of population has been displaced compared to other times; but, regardless of the cause that has generated this migration (not because it is not important, but because it has become a critical and controversial issue,) we want to highlight the positive effects generated by migration to the country that receives these groups.
Among the positive effects for the economy of the countries that receive migrants are:
• Increases productivity, since the workforce increases and diversifies, this generates more competition between companies and better conditions for workers. Likewise, human capital with academic preparation is incorporated, which did not cause investment to the country to generate it.
• Affects, directly and indirectly, economic growth. It is estimated that there is an increase in GDP and the fiscal deficit is reduced.
• Increases tax collection, in most cases, benefits the entire population.
• Increases the consumption of goods and services
• It generates dynamism in the economy, since many of the migrants are creators of companies, generators of jobs, who seek to innovate or improve the services that are already offered.
• Increase the amount of remittances, which increases the income of the receiving country
One of the best-known migrations in the world is that of groups of Mexican origin who move to the United States. To learn a little more about the effects, we can find a Working Document Number 11/17 entitled “The economic effects of Migration in the Destination country. The benefits of Mexican migration for the United States.”, we found several positive effects within the US economy, of which we highlight the following:
– Mexican migrants largely satisfy the demand for employment in the US. They have increased in importance in the US workforce and this trend is expected to continue in the coming decades.
– Mexican migrants pay more in taxes to the US than they send in remittances to Mexico.
– Contribute to consumption.
– Greater potential demand for migrants due to the aging of the US population.
– Contribution to productivity and economic growth
We must change the perspective on migration and understand that it is a process that has occurred throughout history and that it can be improved, that governments must allow migrants to have a path for their stay to be legal, this would allow the country that receives them and their population, can benefit from all the positive effects that migration has on their economy.
